Since our founding 2011, Norwich Technologies (NT) has continued to evolve from the residential market to DG and utility scale while steadily growing. Over the past three years, NT has commissioned nearly 50 distributed energy solar projects across northern New England through our vertically integrated team. We have completed a wide range of solar systems and have been consistently ranked by Solar Power World magazine as a Top Solar Contractor in the USA.
Following the surge in solar development which was in part bolstered by the Inflation Reduction Act, our divisions have been planning ahead to 2026 through 2028 to prepare for continued growth. And then came what people are describing as unprecedented levels of uncertainty due to tariffs and proposed legislation. Over the past decade of operations, NT has weathered similar external conditions, and has continued to grow through it all driven by our commitment to provide local, affordable energy to our communities.
We leverage the skills of our team and the strengths of unique divisions working together – development and finance through Breakaway Renewables, EPC work of Norwich Solar, and O&M expertise of RunTime Solar. By allowing our divisions some level of independence and interdependence we continue to build a pipeline with our development team, while generating revenue from additional EPC and O&M work. We operate at a scale that fosters deep collaboration and nimble decision-making.
Regional Market Expertise
The success of our integrated business units model, is exemplified in our work in the Maine market.
Our development team, Breakaway Renewables, jumped in early to that state several years ago when solar development looked like a very strong prospect. By the end of 2022 we were planning to develop and build over 14 MW of solar in the state. Despite setbacks from lengthy delays of interconnection studies, we are on track for our Norwich Solar EPC team to complete 6 projects totaling a little over 10 MW DC this year. To get these projects moving, we resized the designs – often reducing the plans from 1.975 MW to .975 kW – to allow us to gain returns on our investments and deliver quality projects for our investment partners.
Even with scaled down projects like ours, Maine was in the top 20 states for solar power growth in 2024 according to a recent SEIA report. The path to our success was guided by diligently working with utilities combined with internal collaborations making us quick to adapt plans.
Several projects are still in the late stages of development pipeline and several more are starting construction soon to keep us very active in the state throughout this year and into 2026. There are also additional projects we’re EPCing for other developers. We continue to explore new projects in the state to meet the region’s increasing energy needs.
Leveraging the success we’ve achieved in Maine, we are setting sights on expanding our operations into neighboring New York state. Our Breakaway Renewables development team is looking for suitable sites, and the Norwich Solar team is bidding on projects to EPC for other developers in the region.
Agility to Work Against the Clock
While we are championing strong advocacy to limit the negative impacts on renewable energy finance in the Budget Reconciliation Bill, we are quickly working to “safe harbor” projects that are already under contract or nearing final contract agreements. That means finding ways we can begin construction as soon as possible following IRS guidelines. This is not the first “safe harbor” deadline we have faced and as an industry we are going in with much more knowledge. As a result, we are feeling confident that we can meet or exceed our targets for 2026. That may mean moving a lot more projects into the construction schedule, but our team of Norwich Solar project managers is ready to juggle them all.
